Prodding and poking

A week later, I'm back at RUH for further tests. A high number of people with Paget's disease of the nipple, also have breast cancer.

I've been called back in to RUH for a breast ultrasound/biopsy, a mammogram and an MRI scan. I was told that because they're trying to fit me in as soon as possible, that I would wait around all day and that they would fit me in when they can.

The mammogram wasn't all that great, but it was doable. Because I have implants, the nurse had to take some extra pictures.

The biopsy wasn't so nice. I was quite nervous about this one as they use a big needle to extract some cells from inside the breast. The radiologist found a mass of calcification through the ultrasound and took 3 samples. She had given me some anaesthetic so it was mostly a pulling feeling until the mechanics of the needle punched down to extract the cells. This was a bit of a pinching feeling. It took a good 15 minutes with this needle going in and out, but it felt like forever. I only saw the needle at the end (thank god) and was quite surprised at the size of that monster!

The MRI scan was possibly the worst procedure of all 3. I had a drip inserted into my hand and had to lie face down on this bed with my boobs dangling into a boxed area where the scanning would take place. The nurses did a series of 6 scans taking around 4-20mins each. It was a long time to lie dead still and was very noisy. At one point I was so bored, I was imagining that a helicopter had just landed next to me! The worst of this experience was when they activated the drip and it felt like I was wetting myself. I felt lucky that another patient had warned me about it 5 minutes before I went in as I would have panicked otherwise. It also made me feel so ill that I thought I was going to throw up in their machine. I was going to sound the alarm but was so panicked that they'd make me start all over again, that I just kept breathing through it.

I was glad when that was over. Unfortunately I would have to wait over a couple of weeks for any results as I'd planned a holiday to the US.
